Four-Pillar Life Periods vs. Luck Cycles (限運與大運)
Compare static pillar life-period overlays with calculated moving Luck Pillars, including inputs, boundaries, uses, and limits.
Overview
Four-pillar life periods and Luck Cycles are different layers. Life-period divisions assign broad age contexts to the four natal positions under a school-specific table. Luck Pillars are calculated moving stem-branch periods with direction and start-age conventions. One supplies a positional overlay; the other introduces timed qi that interacts with the natal chart. They may be compared, but never substituted for each other.

Define the two clocks separately
A pillar life-period method maps ages onto Year, Month, Day, and Hour positions without changing the natal symbols. Its boundaries come from the selected teaching convention.
A Luck Pillar supplies a new stem-branch pair for a calculated multi-year period. Direction and start age depend on disclosed rules and birth data.

Do not copy one method’s ages into the other
Life-period tables can begin at fixed ages, while Luck Pillars often begin at a fractional age derived from a solar-term interval. Their transitions therefore need not coincide.
Rounding, nominal age, elapsed age, and start-of-year policy can shift displayed boundaries. Store the exact convention rather than only a rounded label.
- Keep independent boundary calculations.
- Retain unrounded start-age data where available.
Combine them as two evidence layers
First read the natal pillar position, then the active Luck Pillar’s relation to the entire natal chart. If a school also uses life periods, add that context as a third, explicitly named layer.
Convergence can raise interpretive attention but does not guarantee an event. Divergence is useful counterevidence and should remain visible.

Keep timing claims conditional
Neither method can promise a job, marriage, pregnancy, illness, accident, wealth, or death. They describe symbolic timing conditions with limited resolution.
Use contemporary evidence and professional guidance for real decisions, and state uncertainty near every calculated or conventional boundary.
