Four Pillars of Destiny in Bazi (四柱八字)
Learn what the Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars contain, how Bazi uses the Day Master and month command, and why one pillar cannot decide a chart.
Overview
The Four Pillars of Destiny, or 四柱八字, represent a birth moment through four stem-branch pairs: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Their eight written characters are the chart’s calculated base, not a finished reading. Ziping analysis centers on the Day Stem as Day Master, uses the Month Branch to establish seasonal command, and compares every visible stem, branch, hidden stem, relationship, and timing layer as one system.

A pillar is a calculated stem-branch pair
Each pillar joins one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches in the valid sixty-pair cycle. The four pairs preserve different time resolutions of the same birth moment.
The branch can contain hidden stems, but those are derived contents rather than extra pillars. A chart therefore remains four pillars even when its analytical layers expand.

The Day Master and month command organize the chart
Classical Ziping method takes the Day Stem as the reference self. Ten Gods and many other relations are calculated relative to this stem rather than to the year animal.
The Month Branch supplies the seasonal command and a primary structural context. Day Master and month command have different jobs; neither makes the other six characters optional.

Read relationships across the complete chart
A responsible reading compares support, drain, control, roots, exposure, combinations, clashes, pillar positions, and distance. The same character can function differently when its season and surrounding relations change.
Luck cycles and annual pillars are later timing layers. They interact with the natal four pillars but do not rewrite the original birth chart.

The eight characters are evidence, not fate sentences
Traditional palace and family analogies can guide questions, but they do not prove facts about parents, marriage, children, wealth, health, or character. Those claims require broader chart evidence and careful real-world boundaries.
