Overview
The Four Pillars of Destiny, also called Bazi or 四柱八字, encode a resolved birth instant as four columns: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each column contains one Heavenly Stem above one Earthly Branch, producing the eight visible characters. This calculated chart is the input to a reading, not a life verdict. Ziping analysis uses the Day Stem as Day Master, the Month Branch as seasonal command, and then compares stems, branches, hidden stems, roots, Ten Gods, interactions, and later timing layers across the whole chart.

What are the Four Pillars of Destiny?
The Four Pillars are four calculated stem-branch pairs assigned to one birth instant. From left-to-right display conventions can vary, but the analytical positions remain Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pair must be one of the valid sixty combinations in the sexagenary cycle.
The term “Eight Characters” counts the four visible stems and four visible branches. Hidden stems inside branches, Ten Gods, Na Yin, palaces, useful gods, luck cycles, and annual influences are derived or interpretive layers; they are not extra birth pillars.

Year, Month, Day and Hour have different calculation jobs
The Year Pillar uses the declared Bazi year boundary, commonly the exact Li Chun instant in a Ziping implementation. The Month Branch changes at the twelve Jie boundaries and its stem follows from the resolved Year Stem. The Day Pillar follows a continuous sixty-day chronology under a declared day boundary. The Hour Branch uses a two-hour interval and its stem derives from the Day Stem.
A corrected time zone, solar-term boundary, effective date, or hour interval can change one pillar and its downstream relationships. The system should recalculate dependent values rather than editing a displayed character by hand.

Calculate the chart before reading it
Start with birth date, clock time, birthplace, historical time zone and daylight-saving status. Apply the declared civil-time or solar-time policy, resolve Li Chun and Jie boundaries, compute the sexagenary day under the stated day-change convention, and derive the hour pair from the effective time and Day Stem.
Record uncertainty instead of inventing precision. If a birth-time range crosses an hour, day, month, or year boundary, calculate every supported candidate chart and identify which claims change. A calendar date or zodiac animal alone cannot reproduce the Four Pillars.

Use the Day Master and Month Command for different tasks
Classical Ziping method takes the Day Stem as the Day Master, the reference from which Ten Gods and many support, drain, control, and output relations are calculated. The Day Master is one character, not the whole person.
The Month Branch supplies the month command and primary seasonal context. Day Master and Month Command organize the analysis in different ways; neither makes the other six visible characters, hidden stems, roots, or interactions optional.

- Assess season from the resolved Month Branch and declared method.
Read the Four Pillars in a reproducible order
First verify all four pairs. Second identify the Day Master and Month Command. Third expose hidden stems and roots. Fourth calculate Ten Gods and elemental relations. Fifth inspect combinations, clashes, harms, punishments, distance, transformation conditions, strength, pattern, and useful-god methods under named rules.
Only after the natal structure is stable should luck pillars, annual pillars, or shorter timing layers be compared with it. State the exact characters and rule supporting each interpretation, and retain counterevidence that would weaken the claim.

A Four Pillars chart is not a guaranteed biography
Traditional position analogies can organize questions about ancestry, environment, self, relationships, later aims, or children, but they do not prove facts about parents, marriage, fertility, wealth, health, career, personality, morality, or lifespan.
