Distinguish the Month Command carried by the Month Branch from the complete Month Pillar and use each correctly in season, Ten Gods, and interactions.
Overview
The Month Pillar is the complete stem-branch pair for the solar-term month. The Month Command is the seasonal authority associated primarily with its Earthly Branch and the qi active within that month. The Month Stem participates visibly in Ten Gods and stem relations, while the Month Branch sets the seasonal environment and contains hidden stems. Treating the two terms as identical obscures which evidence supports a pattern, strength, or climate judgment.

Separate the pair from its seasonal authority
A Month Pillar such as 丙寅 contains a visible stem and a branch. Month-command analysis asks what seasonal qi 寅 carries at that birth instant, not merely what the printed pair is called.
The branch and its hidden stems therefore require more than a one-element label. Seasonal depth and the adopted school affect the reading.

Calculate both components through their correct dependencies
The Month Branch changes at exact Jie transitions. The Month Stem is derived from the already resolved Year Stem through the Five Tigers sequence.
A lunar-month number does not establish either component. Boundary births require the precise transition instant and one normalized time basis.
- Do not use lunar month day one.
- Recompute Month Stem if Year Stem changes.
Identify which layer supports each judgment
Pattern and strength methods often begin with the month command, while visible stem combinations or Ten Gods can involve the Month Stem directly. Hidden stems connect the two layers.
A strong seasonal indication can still meet roots, exposure, control, combination, or climate evidence elsewhere. Keep those dependencies visible.

Avoid reducing the chart to the month
Classical emphasis on the month command establishes priority, not exclusivity. The Day Master and all four pillars remain part of the judgment.
