Year Pillar in Bazi (年柱)
Understand how the Bazi Year Pillar is calculated at Li Chun, what its stem and branch record, and how to use ancestral or early-context analogies safely.
Overview
The Year Pillar is the stem-branch pair assigned to the Bazi year containing the resolved birth instant. In OpenFate’s declared method, it changes at the exact Li Chun boundary, not January 1 or Lunar New Year. Classical texts call it a root or origin position and sometimes associate it with ancestry, early environment, or wider context, but those are reading lenses rather than verified biographical facts.

Resolve the instant before selecting the Bazi year
Historical time zone, daylight-saving status, birthplace, and any declared solar-time policy must be settled before comparing the birth instant with Li Chun. A date-only shortcut can misclassify boundary births.
After the side of Li Chun is known, the year maps to one valid pair in the sixty-cycle. The stem and branch advance together and cannot be selected independently.

Use the root analogy as positional context
The Yuan Hai Zi Ping describes the Year as a root and links it with ancestors and inherited context. This gives the reader a domain to investigate, not documentary knowledge about a family.
A Ten God or interaction in the Year Pillar still needs strength, season, roots, and links to the rest of the chart. Position modifies a symbol; it does not replace its relationship rule.

Compare the Year Pillar with Month, Day, and Hour
The Year and Month Pillars form the chart’s earlier and wider contextual layer, but their actual relationship depends on the two stems, two branches, and any intervening combinations or clashes.
Distance matters because adjacent pillars interact more directly in many reading methods, yet non-adjacent matches are not erased. State the adopted method instead of using a hidden universal weight.

- Do not translate distance into certainty.
Do not confuse year animal, year pillar, and whole chart
The zodiac animal labels only the Year Branch. It omits the Year Stem and the other three pillars, so it cannot reproduce a Four Pillars analysis.
A favorable or difficult Year Pillar label does not rank the person or predict one life period. Natal context, timing layers, and real evidence remain separate.
