Read the four Earthly Branches through season, hidden stems, roots, palace position, and interactions without treating zodiac animals as a full chart.
Overview
The four Earthly Branches form the lower row of a Bazi chart. They anchor season, contain hidden stems, provide roots, define double-hour and calendrical positions, and participate in combinations, meetings, clashes, punishments, harms, and breaks. The Month Branch supplies the month command and the Day Branch is the Day Master’s immediate seat. Zodiac-animal names are only labels for these branches and cannot replace their structural analysis.

Open each branch before interpreting it
Record the branch, Five Phase, seasonal position, hidden stems, and pillar location. A branch’s main phase does not erase the additional qi preserved in its hidden contents.
Those hidden stems can root visible stems and receive Ten God labels relative to the Day Master. Their strength varies with season and interaction.

- Do not count a branch as one undifferentiated element.
Give the Month Branch its distinct seasonal role
All four branches matter, but the Month Branch identifies the solar-term month and primary seasonal command. It is not just one vote among four equal element counts.
Season affects whether roots and relations are timely, resting, constrained, or supported. Different strength methods should state how they weight this evidence.

- Keep season and simple quantity distinct.
Evaluate complete and competing branch configurations
Pairwise contacts can coexist with three-branch combinations, seasonal meetings, repetition, and timing activations. The mere presence of a named pair does not determine which relation dominates.
Check completeness, season, supporting qi, position, distance, and whether another relation redirects the participants.

Keep zodiac and palace meanings bounded
Animal stories and palace associations can aid memory, but they do not prove personality, family biography, health, or fate. The branch is first a technical calendrical and relational symbol.
Use real-world evidence for decisions and treat Bazi interpretations as conditional cultural analysis.
