Pillar Distance From the Day Master (四柱遠近與日主)

Use same-pillar, adjacent, and non-adjacent distance as one Bazi weighting factor without overriding season, roots, strength, or explicit relations.

Overview

Pillar distance describes how chart positions sit relative to the Day Master and Day Pillar: same-pillar, adjacent, or separated. Some methods use proximity to weight immediacy or ease of contact. Distance does not create, cancel, or rank a relation by itself. A non-adjacent symbol may be seasonally dominant or strongly rooted, while an adjacent symbol may be weak, combined away, or contradicted.

Define the distance rule precisely

Name the reference point and whether distance is measured by columns, visible stems, branches, or palace order. “Near” should not remain an undefined impression.

The Day Branch shares a pillar with the Day Master; Month and Hour Pillars are adjacent; Year is farther in layout. Other relationships may use a different reference and must say so.

  • State the reference and unit.
  • Do not mix stem and branch distance silently.

Use proximity as a weight, not a law

Adjacent symbols may be easier to read as directly connected in some traditions, especially when they also generate, control, combine, or clash. Proximity alone is not a technical interaction.

A distant symbol can remain influential through season, strong roots, repeated qi, a complete branch configuration, or timing activation.

  • Require an actual relationship.
  • Compare proximity with structural weight.

Preserve exceptions and competing pathways

A nearby relation may be weak, blocked, transformed, or redirected, while a farther relation may be the chart’s clearest support or control. Record both before choosing emphasis.

School-specific rules about barriers, adjacency, or transmission should be cited and not presented as universal engine output.

  • Show why distance matters in this chart.
  • Label school-specific weighting.

Do not convert visual distance into emotional distance

Column spacing cannot prove closeness to parents, partner, children, colleagues, or society. Palace interpretations require context and cannot diagnose real relationships.

Use communication, records, and present behavior for relationship decisions. Bazi distance remains a symbolic analytical factor.

  • No family closeness claim from layout.
  • Keep symbolic and real distance separate.
