Hour Pillar in Bazi (時柱)
Learn how two-hour branches and the Five Rats rule form the Hour Pillar, what the hour position can represent, and how to handle uncertain birth times.
Overview
The Hour Pillar is the stem-branch pair assigned to the effective birth time. The branch comes from one of twelve double-hour intervals, and the stem is derived from the resolved Day Stem through the Five Rats sequence. Classical readings often associate the hour position with later development, children, outcomes, or what comes to fruition, but an unknown or boundary-adjacent birth time must remain uncertain rather than being guessed.

Resolve the effective local time before selecting a branch
Historical time-zone rules, daylight saving, and any declared solar-time adjustment can move a clock reading into another double hour. Use the birthplace rather than the reader’s current zone.
At a branch boundary, retain the supported time range. Produce separate candidate charts only if the range actually changes a pillar.
- Preserve civil and effective times.
- Do not round an uncertain record into certainty.
Derive the Hour Stem from the Day Stem
Five Rats maps each Day Stem group to the Zi-hour starting stem and advances one stem per hour branch. The same clock interval therefore receives different Hour Stems on different Day Stems.
If the day-boundary policy changes the Day Pillar, recalculate the Hour Stem from the new Day Stem. A standalone hour lookup table is incomplete.
- Validate Day Stem to Hour Stem dependency.
- Recompute after any effective-date change.
Use later-life and child analogies cautiously
Yuan Hai Zi Ping calls the hour flower and fruit and connects it with descendants. Other methods extend the position to aspirations, output, later development, or final expression.
These domains are interpretive lenses, not proof of fertility, child count, old-age fortune, or accomplishments. The actual symbols and whole chart remain primary.
- Label the positional tradition used.
- Avoid medical or family-status claims.
An absent birth time creates scenarios, not a default pillar
When the time is unknown, stable Year, Month, and Day information can still be shown, but the Hour Pillar and every downstream result that depends on it must be marked unresolved.
Rectification may compare candidates against dated evidence under an explicit method. It cannot convert a vague memory or personality fit into a verified minute.
- Show which results remain stable.
- Keep candidate selection auditable and reversible.
