Overview
Direct Officer is the Ten God that controls the Day Master with opposite yin-yang polarity, such as Xin Metal for a Jia Wood Day Master. Its presence describes a regulating relationship; its importance depends on season, roots, visibility and support from the rest of the chart.

How is Direct Officer identified?
Find the element that controls the Day Master, then compare polarity. Jia is yang Wood and Xin is yin Metal, so Xin is Direct Officer to Jia. Yi is yin Wood and Geng is yang Metal, making Geng the Direct Officer to Yi.
“Officer” is a traditional relationship label, not a modern job title or proof of authority. At the structural level it describes regulation and pressure applied to the Day Master.
- Always identify the Day Master before naming an Officer star.
- An exposed stem and a hidden-stem Officer can differ in prominence.
Presence is not the same as strength
Direct Officer becomes more prominent when it is seasonally supported, rooted, exposed or positioned close to the Day Master. Wealth may generate it and Resource may receive its qi, while combinations or strong control can reduce its practical weight.
The Day Master’s capacity matters as well. A strong Officer acting on an unsupported Day Master differs from a rooted Day Master meeting a moderate Officer. More Officer stars are not automatically better or worse.

How Wealth, Resource and Hurting Officer change the picture
Wealth can generate Officer, and Officer can generate Resource before Resource supports the Day Master. This is a possible flow, not an automatic favorable result; strength, placement and interruptions still have to be shown.
Hurting Officer controls Direct Officer, creating the well-known “Hurting Officer meets Officer” relationship. Its effect depends on whether both are strong, whether Resource moderates the clash, and whether the relation is natal or activated by timing.
