Rooted vs. Unrooted Ten Gods (有根無根)
Trace a Ten God from visible stems into branch hidden stems and assess root quality, season, distance, damage, and timing without binary shortcuts.
Overview
A visible Ten-God stem is rooted when compatible qi appears in relevant branch hidden stems under the adopted rooting rules; it is unrooted when no qualifying support is found. Rooting increases structural support but varies by season, branch position, hidden-stem layer, combinations, clashes, storage, and control. One root does not make a label fully strong, and no visible root does not make it nonexistent.

Choose one concrete stem occurrence to trace
The Ten-God category may appear in several stems or hidden stems, so rooting must be attached to a specific symbol and pillar.
A generalized statement that wealth or authority has roots can conceal which occurrence is supported.
- Name the stem and pillar.
- Do not merge multiple occurrences.
Trace the root into exact branch contents
Open each branch’s hidden stems and apply the versioned rooting rules, including same-stem and same-phase distinctions where relevant.
Record whether the root is in the Month Command, adjacent, distant, primary, middle, or residual qi.
- Identify the source branch and layer.
- Keep distance and season visible.
Assess root quality and possible obstruction
A root can be seasonally strong, supported, stored, combined, clashed, or otherwise constrained.
Luck cycles can add or disturb a root for a period, but the natal root map remains unchanged.
- List strengthening and weakening factors.
- Separate natal roots from timing roots.
Rooted does not mean successful or favorable
A rooted unfavorable function may be harder to redirect, while an unrooted favorable function may still operate through support or timing.
Do not convert root status into certainty about wealth, authority, education, family, health, or career.
- Separate strength from usefulness.
- Avoid outcome guarantees.
