Cold, Heat, Dryness, and Dampness in Bazi (寒暖燥濕)

Use 寒暖燥濕 as four chart-climate dimensions derived from season and the whole chart, not literal weather, body temperature, disease, or simple element counts.

Overview

Cold, heat, dryness, and dampness (寒暖燥濕) are four traditional dimensions for describing how seasonal qi and the chart’s elements support or obstruct circulation. Month Command and solar-term depth provide the starting climate, while Fire, Water, Metal, Wood, Earth, hidden qi, roots, and combinations modify it. The dimensions can coexist and must be graded; they are not medical states or direct measurements of a person or environment.

At a glance

Cold
Insufficient warming or constrained activation
Heat
Excess heat or inadequate cooling
Dryness
Insufficient moistening or overly desiccating qi
Dampness
Excess moisture, heaviness, or blocked transformation

Month Command and solar-term depth

Establish the seasonal baseline first

Use the Month Command, exact solar-term position, and the adopted climate table to describe the starting tendency.

Do not reduce a whole season to one absolute label; early, middle, and late positions and local chart modifiers matter.

  • Record the term depth.
  • Use a versioned climate mapping.

Apply whole-chart modifiers without double counting

Evaluate stems, branches, hidden qi, roots, combinations, and circulation paths that warm, cool, moisten, or dry.

One symbol may affect more than one dimension, but its underlying force should not be counted repeatedly as independent full evidence.

  • Trace each modifier once.
  • Preserve source and connection.

Grade mixed conditions and identify the bottleneck

A chart can be cold and damp, hot and dry, or contain offsetting factors; report each dimension rather than forcing one label.

Name which condition currently obstructs circulation and what counterevidence limits confidence.

  • Allow combined climate states.
  • Publish the main obstruction and counterevidence.

Keep chart climate distinct from health and weather

These dimensions do not measure body temperature, hydration, humidity exposure, constitution, or disease.

They cannot prescribe food, herbs, climate, housing, travel, or treatment without independent qualified evidence.

  • No medical or environmental diagnosis.
  • No literal climate remedy.
