Overview
A Useful God for a Following Structure (從格用神) is selected when the Day Master cannot maintain an independent route and the chart’s external momentum is sufficiently coherent to meet a declared following-structure standard. The useful role supports, carries, or expresses the force being followed, while an effective root or rescue may invalidate the premise. Because schools set different gates, the page must disclose formation rules, counterevidence, and uncertainty.

Test the inability to stand before declaring following
Assess Month Command, Day-Master roots, Resource and Companion rescue, exposure, and whether opposing forces can actually operate.
Extreme weakness by score alone is insufficient if an effective root or rescue preserves an ordinary route.

Identify exactly what the chart follows
Name whether the coherent route is Wealth, Officer/Killing, Output, or another recognized configuration under the adopted school.
The useful function should support or express that route without introducing an effective force that restores unresolved competition.

Distinguish natal formation from period disruption
Timing can reinforce the followed route or bring roots and support that challenge the natal operating assumption.
Report period stress or failure separately; do not retroactively change the natal evidence to match later events.
