Overview

Four Waste Days are eight complete day pillars arranged in four seasonal pairs: Geng-Shen and Xin-You in spring, Ren-Zi and Gui-Hai in summer, Jia-Yin and Yi-Mao in autumn, and Bing-Wu and Ding-Si in winter. The lookup is a historical calendrical category, not proof that a person, skill, or period is “wasted.”

The four seasonal pairs

The received table assigns 庚申 Geng-Shen and 辛酉 Xin-You to spring; 壬子 Ren-Zi and 癸亥 Gui-Hai to summer; 甲寅 Jia-Yin and 乙卯 Yi-Mao to autumn; and 丙午 Bing-Wu and 丁巳 Ding-Si to winter. A match requires both the relevant season and one complete natal day pillar.

A Geng stem or Shen branch appearing by itself does not qualify, and the same pillar outside its assigned season does not qualify. The year, month, and hour pillars are not substitutes for the day pillar in this particular rule.

  • Match the season before comparing the complete day pillar.
  • Do not scan isolated stems or branches across all four pillars.

Season boundaries must be declared

A reproducible result needs a named season convention. Solar-term seasons, lunar months, and civil-calendar seasons change on different dates, so a birth near a boundary may move between two rows of the table.

OpenFate does not silently choose a boundary method for this unimplemented marker. Any future calculator should show the birth time, location, time zone, day pillar, boundary convention, and fallback result when the input remains uncertain.

  • State the seasonal convention used by the lookup.
  • Preserve both candidates when the boundary cannot be resolved.

Why the label cannot override a full chart

Classical commentary itself allows supporting structure and favorable influences to change the reading. Month command, Day-Master strength, useful elements, Ten Gods, combinations, clashes, and timing layers remain more informative than one secondary day category.

The current OpenFate Bazi engine does not calculate Four Waste Days. This article documents the historical rule for study and verification; it does not add a hidden penalty to a report or user profile.

  • Keep the category secondary to the full chart.
  • Do not imply that catalog coverage changes a generated report.

“Waste” is not a judgment about a person

The term cannot establish laziness, incompetence, disability, employability, intelligence, financial loss, or a failed life. Translating the historical label literally into a modern character assessment would exceed the rule.

Use the table as cultural and textual material only. Education, employment, money, health, and legal decisions should rely on relevant evidence and qualified advice rather than a day-pillar label.

  • Never use the name to rank or screen people.
  • Keep consequential decisions grounded in real-world evidence.
