What Is Lonely Phoenix Sha (孤鸞煞) in BaZi?
Compare the Lonely Phoenix day lists in San Ming Tong Hui, see why versions differ, and learn why the marker cannot predict loneliness, divorce, or harm to a spouse.
Overview
San Ming Tong Hui preserves more than one Lonely Phoenix list: volume three names eight example days, while volume twelve emphasizes a smaller core group. OpenFate records that source variation and rejects the old claim that one day pillar determines a spouse’s fate or a person’s ability to form relationships.

The Lonely Phoenix lists in San Ming Tong Hui
Volume three names 乙巳 Yi-Si, 丁巳 Ding-Si, 辛亥 Xin-Hai, 戊申 Wu-Shen, and 甲寅 Jia-Yin, then adds 丙午 Bing-Wu, 戊午 Wu-Wu, and 壬子 Ren-Zi. Volume twelve later emphasizes 甲寅, 丁巳, 戊申, and 辛亥 in its own discussion.
Because the same book preserves different scopes, a calculator must disclose its chosen list. In every case the rule is attached to the complete natal day pillar, not to any matching character elsewhere in the chart.
- State whether the broad or core list is being used.
- Match the complete day pillar rather than isolated characters.
Why the name should not be read literally
“Lonely Phoenix” is a poetic and moralized historical label. It is not evidence that someone is lonely, socially isolated, unable to marry, or destined to lose a partner. A name can preserve a textual category without becoming a personal identity.
The associated phrase “harm a spouse” belongs to premodern deterministic language. Modern editorial practice should report it as source history and explicitly reject it as a causal or safety claim.
- A symbolic label is not a diagnosis of social life.
- Do not present “harm to spouse” as a fact or prediction.
What a complete relationship reading requires
Traditional relationship analysis would still need the Day Branch, spouse-related Ten Gods, strength, useful elements, combinations, clashes, and timing layers. A secondary day category cannot override contradictory chart evidence.
Real compatibility also depends on consent, communication, values, conduct, circumstances, and safety. Two people with the same day pillar can have entirely different relationships and choices.
- Keep the marker subordinate to the full chart.
- Keep real relationship evidence above chart symbolism.
No divorce, abuse, or widowhood prediction
Lonely Phoenix Sha cannot predict divorce, abuse, widowhood, death, infertility, sexual orientation, or relationship worth. It must never be used to shame a person, reject a partner, or excuse harmful behavior.
The current OpenFate Bazi engine does not calculate this marker. This sourced page exists to clarify the term and its variants while keeping consequential relationship decisions with the people and evidence involved.
- Do not infer harm or loss from the marker.
- Catalog coverage does not mean OpenFate reports use this label.
