What Is the Metal Spirit (金神) Pattern in BaZi?

Metal Spirit is best documented as a special pattern rather than a free-standing star. San Ming Tong Hui identifies Gui-You, Ji-Si, and Yi-Chou as the three Metal Spirit hours and discusses them primarily when one of the six Jia days meets the required hour and wider seasonal structure.

The three Metal Spirit hour pillars
San Ming Tong Hui names 癸酉 Gui-You, 己巳 Ji-Si, and 乙丑 Yi-Chou as the three Metal Spirit hours. Its main discussion asks whether one of the six Jia day pillars is born in one of those complete hours, with Jia-Zi and Jia-Chen receiving special emphasis.
The hour stem and branch must both match. Finding You, Si, or Chou anywhere in a chart is not enough, and a Gui, Ji, or Yi stem outside the hour pillar does not create this special pattern.

Why Metal Spirit is not a simple Shen Sha switch
The source frames Metal Spirit through pattern validity, seasonal command, fire configuration, and the wider chart rather than a single present-or-absent star. It also preserves discussion of six Ji days, which should be labeled as a variant instead of merged silently into the primary rule.
A reliable implementation therefore needs a declared source version and validation logic. If the chart does not satisfy that version, it should be analyzed through its other structures rather than forced into a Metal Spirit label.

- Do not equate a matching hour with a validated pattern.
Month command and full-chart support come first
Classical pattern analysis still evaluates month command, strength, useful elements, exposed stems, roots, and combinations. The evocative word “metal” does not make the chart automatically strong, wealthy, disciplined, or destructive.
The current OpenFate engine does not calculate Metal Spirit or Metal Spirit Pattern. This page supplies a careful definition for research without implying that OpenFate reports use the category behind the scenes.

No personality, violence, or medical diagnosis
Metal Spirit cannot prove aggression, cruelty, criminality, leadership ability, disability, disease, injury, or lifespan. Historical temperament and catastrophe language should be treated as source context, not modern personal data.
Do not use the pattern for hiring, safety screening, medical choices, financial decisions, or accusations. Real behavior, health information, and professional evidence always take priority.
