What Is Literary Hall (詞館) in BaZi?
Learn the classical Officer-position basis of Ci Guan, the paired stem-branch convention used by OpenFate, its difference from Xue Tang, and its limits.
Overview
Ci Guan borrows the image of the Hanlin literary office for writing and specialization, while its classical principal position is the element’s Officer phase. OpenFate uses a day-stem rule that requires a complete paired stem and branch; the target branch alone is not enough.

Both stem and branch must match the product rule
San Ming Tong Hui gives the elemental Officer phase as the principal Literary Hall while preserving several lineage variants. OpenFate’s public calculator uses a day-stem-to-paired-pillar convention, not a branch-only lookup.
For example, a Jia day requires Geng-Yin, Yi requires Xin-Mao, Geng requires Ren-Shen, and Xin requires Gui-You. If either component is missing, the product rule does not match.

Ci Guan and Xue Tang are related, not identical
Xue Tang is commonly associated with the Growth phase, while Ci Guan is associated with the Officer phase. Classical sources place them together to discuss different aspects of learning and literary work.
Resource, Output, Officer, seasonal strength, and actual work still carry the analysis. Matching both stars does not bypass chart structure or double a person’s ability.

Literary imagery does not guarantee a career or reputation
Ci Guan may prompt discussion of writing, communication, research, or knowledge work. It cannot guarantee skill, publication, examination results, office, or fame.
Good work comes from training, editing, audience awareness, and sustained production. Portfolios, experience, and relevant standards should assess professional ability.

Hiring, education, and creative-decision boundary
Ci Guan must not guide hiring, admission, ability grouping, copyright judgments, or predictions of creative success. Its absence says nothing about a person’s learning potential.
Education and employment decisions need transparent, task-relevant criteria. This marker supplies traditional terminology and context only.
