What Are the Ten Evil Defeats (十惡大敗) in BaZi?
See the ten complete day pillars called Ten Evil Defeats, the xun-void logic behind the list, and why the name cannot predict poverty, crime, or catastrophe.
Overview
Ten Evil Defeats names ten complete day pillars whose stem Lu position falls in the void of that sexagenary ten-day cycle. San Ming Tong Hui says the natal day is the relevant lookup and also warns that a match is not automatically adverse when the wider chart provides support.

The ten day pillars in the classical list
The list is 甲辰 Jia-Chen, 乙巳 Yi-Si, 丙申 Bing-Shen, 丁亥 Ding-Hai, 戊戌 Wu-Xu, 己丑 Ji-Chou, 庚辰 Geng-Chen, 辛巳 Xin-Si, 壬申 Ren-Shen, and 癸亥 Gui-Hai. The source tells readers to identify the condition from the natal day rather than every matching symbol in the chart.
Both characters of the day pillar must match. For example, a Jia day with a branch other than Chen is not Jia-Chen, while a Chen branch elsewhere in the chart does not independently create the category.
- Compare only the complete natal day pillar with the ten-pair list.
- Do not create extra matches from other pillars.
Why the Lu and xun-void relation matters
The list is not an arbitrary collection of frightening names. Its internal derivation compares each day stem’s Lu position with the two branches omitted from that day’s ten-day xun, creating a specific calendrical relationship.
That derivation also sets a verification standard: calculate the sexagenary day correctly, determine its xun, identify the stem’s Lu branch, and confirm that the Lu branch is void. A copied list is convenient, but the derivation catches transcription errors.
- Use the xun-void derivation to audit the memorized table.
- Keep this rule separate from general chart void analysis.
The source rejects an automatic bad verdict
San Ming Tong Hui explicitly notes that not every matching chart is adverse and that favorable support can change the conclusion. Even within the tradition, the name does not license a fixed result without the rest of the chart.
OpenFate does not currently calculate Ten Evil Defeats. The page preserves a source-auditable definition while preventing an unimplemented category from appearing as a score or unexplained report signal.
- Read the source caveat together with the day list.
- Do not treat an unimplemented term as a live product result.
No prediction of crime, bankruptcy, or disaster
The military and legal overtones of the historical name do not prove criminality, moral failure, poverty, bankruptcy, violence, or catastrophe. A traditional label cannot establish conduct or future events.
Do not use this category for lending, hiring, insurance, legal strategy, or personal safety decisions. Those choices require current facts, applicable rules, and qualified professional judgment.
- Do not turn historical rhetoric into a modern risk score.
- Never use the day label for adverse decisions about a person.
