What Is Hook and Noose (勾絞煞) in BaZi?
Learn the paired positions three branches before and after the birth-year branch, the traditional naming rule, and why Gou Jiao cannot predict legal trouble or violence.
Overview
Gou and Jiao occupy the branches three positions ahead of and behind the birth-year branch and oppose each other. Classical naming swaps them for yang men and yin women versus yin men and yang women. This historical rule cannot predict litigation, confinement, violence, or accidents.

The three-branches-ahead and behind rule
San Ming Tong Hui starts from the birth-year branch and identifies the positions three branches forward and backward, which oppose each other. For a Jia-Zi yang male example, Mao is Gou and You is Jiao.
The classical method then swaps the two names according to stem polarity and gender. Since implementations may handle gender differently, a calculator must state its convention rather than present an unexplained table.

One match and a complete pair are not equivalent
The source distinguishes one matched position from both Gou and Jiao appearing and also considers support and control. The label alone is therefore incomplete.
Modern analysis should establish whether the opposition participates in the main chart, where the branches occur, and whether seasonal support or combinations change their function.

Entanglement is a historical metaphor
The characters evoke hooking, involvement, and restraint. They explain how an older text named opposing positions; they do not establish a modern event.

Legal, violence, and accident boundary
Gou Jiao Sha cannot predict lawsuits, imprisonment, criminal liability, assault, animal injury, or death. It cannot identify someone as criminal or violent.
Legal and safety decisions require conduct, documents, current risk, and professional advice. A chart label must never delay help or create unsupported suspicion.
