What Is Loneliness Star (寡宿) in BaZi?
Learn the four year-branch rules for Gua Su, how its tomb-branch targets relate to Gu Chen, and why it cannot predict widowhood, divorce, or singlehood.
Overview
Gua Su uses the year branch: Hai-Zi-Chou finds Xu, Yin-Mao-Chen finds Chou, Si-Wu-Wei finds Chen, and Shen-You-Xu finds Wei. It mirrors Gu Chen on the backward seasonal corner but is not an indicator of widowhood or marriage outcome.

How the four Gua Su targets are found
Group the birth-year branch into a seasonal trio, then move one position behind that trio. The resulting targets are the four storage branches Xu, Chou, Chen, and Wei.
The target must occur among the natal branches. Although texts discuss Gua Su beside Gu Chen, one match never automatically implies the other.
- Derive the target from the year-branch seasonal group.
- Calculate Gu Chen and Gua Su as separate markers.
Storage-branch imagery still depends on structure
All four targets are storage branches, but storage has several technical meanings in BaZi. It cannot simply be translated as emotional closure or loss of relationship.
Combinations, meetings, exposed stems, seasonal strength, and the useful role of the target can produce very different contexts. Main structure comes first.

- Combinations and chart function change the context.
Relationship pacing is not a marriage outcome
Gua Su may serve as a cultural prompt about privacy, relationship pace, or emotional expression, but it does not measure relationship ability.
Marriage and support depend on both people’s behavior, values, circumstances, and choices. One symbolic marker cannot answer those questions.
- Use reflective rather than deterministic language.
- Separate personal space from partner outcomes.
Do not turn a historical name into gendered stigma
The character for “widow” is a historical label. It does not mean the person will lose a spouse, harm a partner, fail to marry, or remain alone, and it must not be applied as a moral judgment against women.
Gua Su is not a mental-health diagnosis or a basis for matchmaking exclusion and family decisions. Use consent, behavior, and qualified advice instead.

- Avoid gendered and shaming interpretations.
