Overview
San Ming Tong Hui identifies 戌亥 as Heavenly Net and 辰巳 as Earthly Trap, then records additional gender, Nayin, direction, and repetition variants. OpenFate currently reports the basic pair when both branches appear anywhere in the natal chart; it does not implement those historical sub-rules.

The basic 戌亥 and 辰巳 definitions
The classical explanation places 戌 and 亥 at the northwest end of the twelve branches and calls their pairing Heavenly Net. It places 辰 and 巳 at the southeast transition and calls their pairing Earthly Trap. The core table therefore requires both branches of the relevant pair.
One Xu, Hai, Chen, or Si branch by itself is not the pair. The terms also should not be confused with Zi Wei Dou Shu’s palace-specific use of similar language, because the calculation unit and system are different.

Historical variants must be labeled, not blended
San Ming Tong Hui preserves additional claims about which birth branch comes first, repeated occurrences, Nayin elements, and a male/female division. These are source-specific interpretive extensions rather than part of the minimal pair definition.
OpenFate does not infer modern gender identity from historical binary rules and does not apply those variants in its current calculation. A comparative article may document them, but a product result must say exactly which rule version was used.

What the current engine reports—and what it does not
OpenFate currently reports Heavenly Net when 戌 and 亥 both appear among the four natal branches, and Earthly Trap when 辰 and 巳 both appear. It records a chart-level marker without scoring order, location, repetition, Nayin class, gender, or timing layers.
A responsible reading still examines combinations, clashes, punishments, harms, seasonal strength, hidden stems, useful elements, and pillar positions. The pair does not erase the more direct structural relations between the same branches and the rest of the chart.

No prediction of imprisonment, death, or family harm
The net and trap metaphors cannot prove confinement, arrest, litigation, illness, disability, death, marital failure, infertility, or harm to relatives. Harsh passages in historical sources describe their period’s interpretive rhetoric, not verified outcomes.
Legal, safety, medical, and relationship decisions require current evidence and qualified advice. The marker may support cultural study, but it must never be used to accuse, frighten, or restrict a person.
