Janma Nakshatra: Your Moon-Based Birth Star

Overview

Janma Nakshatra is the nakshatra occupied by the Moon at the birth timestamp in the declared sidereal system. It is not the Sun sign, the ascendant’s nakshatra or the nakshatra running today. Preserve the Moon’s degree as well as its name: the degree determines the pada and the opening period balance.

Which row in a chart is the birth star?

Find the Moon row in the calculated position list. A chart may list a nakshatra for every planet and the ascendant; those are valid labels for those points, but only the Moon row answers the conventional Janma Nakshatra question. Check that the chart is natal rather than a transit chart.

Keep the timestamp, civil-time conversion, ayanamsa and Moon longitude together. If the recorded birth time is approximate, calculate the allowed time interval. A sector that stays the same across that interval is more defensible than a single precise-looking output selected without checking uncertainty.

Magha Moon and a different ascendant star

Use invented coordinates: Moon 123°20′ and ascendant 185°. The Moon is at 3°20′ Leo, in Magha pada 2. The ascendant is at 5° Libra, in Chitra pada 4. The birth nakshatra is Magha; Chitra describes the ascendant and does not replace it.

In the cited Moon-based Vimshottari method, Magha selects Ketu as the opening period lord. At 123°20′ the Moon has traversed one quarter of Magha, leaving three quarters. Applied to Ketu’s seven-year allocation, that is 5.25 dasha years remaining—not automatically 5.25 civil-calendar years without a stated year convention.

Can a birth star be found from a name?

A name may follow a family naming custom, may have been changed, or may have no astrological connection. It is not a replacement for a calculated birth Moon. A name-based label and a birth-coordinate label should be recorded separately instead of forced to agree.

The opening period lord is not necessarily the period running now. Establish the opening balance and the elapsed chronology before making that comparison. Neither a Janma Nakshatra label nor a period table proves an event will occur; real decisions still require ordinary evidence.
