Nakshatra Padas: Find the Correct Quarter

Calculate a nakshatra pada from its 3°20′ interval. See why counting from the sign boundary fails and how exact quarter boundaries are assigned.

Overview

A pada is one of four equal 3°20′ quarters of a nakshatra. Count from the start of the nakshatra, not automatically from 0° of the zodiac sign. A pada number locates a coordinate more precisely; it is not a standalone personality score or a complete divisional-chart reading.

The four quarters and their calculation

Subtract the nakshatra’s starting longitude from the point’s longitude. Express that offset in arcminutes, divide by 200, discard the fractional remainder, then add one. Offsets 0–199 arcminutes are pada 1; 200–399 are pada 2; 400–599 are pada 3; 600–799 are pada 4.

Retain seconds or a sufficiently precise decimal internally. Rounding a coordinate to a displayed minute can move it across a quarter boundary. A label derived from an unrounded coordinate should not be “corrected” solely because the short display appears to show the next quarter.

Punarvasu crosses a sign in its fourth pada

Punarvasu begins at 80° total sidereal longitude, or 20° Gemini. An invented coordinate of 89°59′ has advanced 9°59′, or 599 arcminutes, and is in pada 3. Exactly 90° has advanced 600 arcminutes and belongs to pada 4, at 0° Cancer.

The sign changes at 90°, but the nakshatra does not: Punarvasu ends at 93°20′. Counting quarters from 0° Cancer would incorrectly call that point pada 1. The correct origin remains Punarvasu’s beginning in Gemini.

Does a pada directly give a Navamsa interpretation?

A 3°20′ pada has the same angular width as one ninth of a sign, so nakshatra quarters and Navamsa divisions align in the conventional framework. However, “pada 2” alone does not identify a Navamsa sign: the natal zodiac location and the declared mapping rule are also needed.

Use the pada as a verified coordinate field before examining a divisional chart. Birth-time uncertainty or an ayanamsa difference may leave the nakshatra unchanged while altering the pada. Report both possibilities where appropriate; do not select a quarter because its description feels flattering.
