How to Find Your Nakshatra from a Birth Chart

Find a birth nakshatra from the Moon’s sidereal degree. Follow input checks, read a worked example, and resolve disagreements between calculators.

Overview

To find your conventional birth nakshatra, calculate the Moon’s sidereal longitude for the birth timestamp, then locate it in the 27-sector table. Record the ayanamsa and read the Moon row—not the Sun, ascendant or today’s panchanga. This page explains the lookup; it is not itself a birth-data calculator.

Prepare the input before opening the table

Confirm whether the recorded time is morning or evening, which calendar was used and what civil-time offset applied at the birthplace on that date. Place is relevant to that time conversion; for a fixed instant, the geocentric Moon coordinate is not changed simply by selecting another city. A topocentric calculation is a different setting and must be named.

Select an explicit sidereal mode. Swiss Ephemeris documents multiple ayanamsas and requires the chosen mode to be specified; a software label saying “sidereal” does not establish that two applications use the same setting. Preserve the numerical Moon longitude so a disagreement can be investigated.

Read the sector and quarter from one coordinate

Suppose a teaching chart reports Moon at 185° total sidereal longitude. Subtracting Libra’s starting 180° gives 5° Libra. The nakshatra table places 185° within Chitra’s 173°20′–186°40′ interval, rather than automatically assigning all Libra to one star.

The offset from Chitra’s start is 11°40′, or 700 arcminutes. Three complete 200-arcminute quarters have passed, so this is pada 4. Record “Moon: 5° Libra; Chitra; pada 4” with the settings. These invented coordinates demonstrate the lookup and do not calculate any person’s birth chart.

What if two calculators disagree or birth time is unknown?

Compare the same timestamp, time-zone handling, Moon reference, ayanamsa and unrounded longitude in that order. Do not average two nakshatra names. If the possible birth interval crosses a boundary, keep both candidate labels until better evidence narrows the time; a date alone is not always sufficient.

A successful lookup confirms a classification under specified rules, not the truth of a personality or compatibility claim.
