Hasta Nakshatra: Virgo Degrees and Moon Period
Locate Hasta within Virgo, follow a late-pada Moon example, and distinguish the Moon’s timing role from Mercury’s sign rulership.
Overview
Hasta extends from 10° to 23°20′ sidereal Virgo, or 160°–173°20′ total longitude. Its Vimshottari lord is the Moon. Mercury rules the containing sign, Virgo; the two associations answer different questions.

How is Hasta different from Virgo?
Hasta is a 13°20′ subset of Virgo, between Uttara Phalguni and Chitra. A Virgo placement near either end of the sign may therefore have another nakshatra. Asking for the specific degree avoids assigning Hasta to every Virgo Moon.
When the Moon is the occupant, it is also the timing lord in this sector. That coincidence does not make the Moon Virgo’s ruler. Mercury’s actual position remains a separate chart fact.
A late Hasta Moon and its remaining fraction
Take a hypothetical Moon at 21°40′ Virgo, or 171°40′ total longitude. It has advanced 11°40′, equivalent to 700 arcminutes, from Hasta’s beginning. That places it in pada 4, which starts at 170°.
The remaining arc is 1°40′, or 100 of 800 arcminutes. The cited Moon-based method gives 10 × 100/800 = 1.25 dasha years of the Moon. Do not use the fraction traversed, 700/800, as the fraction still left.
Does the name prove manual ability?
The name is sometimes used in traditional imagery about hands. A geometric assignment does not measure dexterity, craft skill or occupation. Those claims need real evidence about training and performance, not merely a nakshatra label.
For calculator comparison, verify the unrounded longitude near 170° and 173°20′. The former changes the pada within Hasta; the latter changes the star to Chitra. A different quarter and a different star are not the same error.
