Exposed Hidden Stems in Bazi (透干)
Learn how a branch-contained stem becomes visibly represented in the four Heavenly Stems and why exposure still requires roots, season, and whole-chart context.
Overview
Exposure (透干) means that a Heavenly Stem contained in an Earthly Branch is also present among the visible stems, usually assessed through the relevant branch and chart context. Exposure makes that qi explicit; it does not automatically make it strong, favorable, transformed, or dominant. The supporting branch, season, root continuity, and competing relations remain necessary.
At a glance
- Hidden source
- A stem contained in an Earthly Branch
- Visible match
- Same Heavenly Stem appears in the stem row
- Effect
- Makes that qi explicit for analysis
- Root check
- Identify the branch supplying the stem
- Strength checks
- Season, position, support, and obstruction
- Limit
- Exposure is not automatic strength or transformation
Match a visible stem to actual branch contents
List the four visible Heavenly Stems and expand all four branches. A stem is exposed when the relevant hidden-stem identity is also represented above.
Name both locations. A visible stem without a matching branch may be rootless, while a matching hidden stem without any visible occurrence remains hidden rather than exposed.
- Show the visible stem and supporting branch.
- Do not confuse existence with exposure.
Keep Ten God identity and visibility separate
Ten God identity comes from the stem’s relation to the Day Master whether the stem is visible or hidden. Exposure changes presentation and accessibility, not the relational formula.
A visible Ten God may be easier to discuss, but its ability to function still depends on strength, support, control, and the chart’s question.
- Calculate relationship before interpretation.
- Visibility does not guarantee effectiveness.
Test root continuity and seasonal support
Identify whether the visible stem is rooted in primary, middle, or residual qi and whether that branch is seasonally supported or damaged.
Repetition, generation, combinations, clashes, and obstruction can strengthen or redirect the pathway. A single matched character does not finish the analysis.
- Grade the root instead of merely counting it.
- Record competing relationships.
Do not equate visible with manifested events
Exposure does not prove that a person openly displays a trait or that a career, relationship, illness, or financial event will appear.
Present it as structural visibility within traditional Bazi and keep real-life claims conditional and evidence-based.
- No guaranteed manifestation.
- No consequential decision from exposure alone.
