Having Roots in Bazi (得根)
Understand what it means for a stem or Day Master to have roots and how to document branch source, qi layer, season, and damage before judging support.
Overview
Having Roots (得根) states that the stem being assessed has qualifying same-phase support in the Earthly Branches. It is often used as the result of a root check, while 通根 emphasizes the connection itself. The claim must identify the root source and condition; one weak residual root does not equal broad strength, and rootlessness does not settle the whole chart.

Name whose root is being assessed
The subject may be the Day Master or another visible stem. Identify it before searching the branches; different stems can have different root conditions in the same chart.
A general statement such as “the chart is rooted” obscures which Ten God or function receives support.
- Choose one visible stem at a time.
- Keep each root result separate.
Show the exact supporting branch evidence
List the branch, the matching hidden stem, and whether it is primary, middle, or residual qi. If the method accepts same-phase opposite-polarity roots, state that rule.
A reproducible result also records whether the branch is the Month Command, repeated, combined, clashed, or otherwise altered.

Evaluate quality after confirming presence
Root presence answers one question; usable strength answers another. Seasonal support, nearby generation, repeated roots, exposure, and branch condition can change the weight.
A stem may have a root and still be restrained, drained, combined, or structurally secondary. Avoid collapsing the network into yes or no.

Having roots does not prove resilience, family support, property, fertility, health, or longevity. Those are unsupported literal extensions.
