Heavenly Stems and Their Sitting Branches (天干坐支)
Learn how to read each visible stem with the branch directly beneath it, including hidden stems, roots, generation, control, and same-pillar limits.
Overview
A Heavenly Stem’s sitting branch is the Earthly Branch directly below it in the same pillar. The pair can show immediate generation, control, root support, or mixed hidden-stem relations. “Sitting on” names position, not a verdict: the stem may be rooted elsewhere, the branch may contain several Ten Gods, and season plus cross-pillar relations can outweigh a simple same-pillar label.

Keep the complete stem-branch pair visible
Record the upper stem and lower branch of the same pillar, then expand every hidden stem in that branch.
The branch’s headline phase is not enough. A three-stem branch can support, drain, or control the upper stem through different internal layers.
- Do not reduce the branch to one word.
- Preserve pillar position.
Map same-pillar relations in layers
First compare the visible stem with the branch’s phase, then test exact root matches and calculate the hidden stems’ Ten Gods relative to the Day Master.
Same-pillar proximity can make the relation easy to identify, but it does not invalidate other roots or interactions elsewhere.
- Separate phase relation from exact root.
- Keep Day Master Ten Gods distinct.
Add season and cross-pillar evidence
Month Command, repeated phases, visible generation, branch combinations, and clashes can change how the pair functions.
A stem controlled by its sitting branch may still be strong through season and roots; a generated stem may still be weak if the source is unavailable.
- Test support outside the pillar.
- Do not infer strength from one arrow.
Avoid fixed labels such as good or bad seat
A sitting branch does not by itself determine personality, marriage, career, health, or social status. Day-Pillar labels especially must not become partner judgments.
Use the pair as one local relationship within a complete, conditional chart reading.
- No deterministic “sits on” verdict.
- Protect third-party privacy and consent.
