Overview

Root Qi (根氣) is the supporting same-phase qi a visible Heavenly Stem finds inside the Earthly Branches. It describes continuity between the visible and branch layers. Root qi must be attached to a named stem and source branch; its quality varies by primary, middle, or residual position, Month Command, season, repetition, and branch condition.

Define root qi as a specific relationship

Begin with a visible stem and trace same-phase support into the hidden stems of the branches. The result links two chart layers rather than creating a new symbol.

Always identify the source branch and hidden stem. Root qi without a named subject and source cannot be audited.

  • Name the visible stem.
  • Name the supporting branch content.

Record the root’s qi layer

Primary qi generally supplies more direct continuity than a middle or residual layer, but the distinction is qualitative unless a declared system specifies weights.

Multiple root sources should be listed separately so season and branch condition can be compared.

  • Keep each root as a separate evidence item.
  • Do not hide method-specific weighting.

Evaluate the root in its live chart context

Month Command, climate, generation, control, combinations, clashes, and timing can strengthen, weaken, or redirect root support.

A root remains chart data even when damaged. Describe the current status rather than deleting the branch or stored stem.

  • Apply season before total strength.
  • Retain altered roots with status.

Keep root qi separate from human groundedness

Root qi does not measure emotional stability, family backing, property, ancestry, or physical vitality. Those are metaphorical extensions without direct proof.

Use root qi to document structural support and keep real-life decisions grounded in appropriate evidence.

  • No personality claim from root qi.
  • No medical or financial inference.
