Rootless Revealed Stems in Bazi (虛浮無根)
Learn how to verify a visible stem has no qualifying branch root and why rootless does not mean nonexistent, powerless, false, or doomed.
Overview
Rootless revealed (虛浮無根) describes a visible Heavenly Stem that lacks qualifying same-phase support in the natal branches under the declared root rule. It can still receive generation, repeat in timing, combine, control, or be controlled. Rootlessness weakens one form of continuity but does not make the stem zero, unreal, useless, or automatically unfavorable.

Search all four branches before calling a stem rootless
Expand every natal branch and compare its hidden stems with the visible stem. Record the matching rule and confirm that no qualifying root exists.
Do not overlook secondary qi or assume a branch’s headline phase tells the full contents. Rootlessness must be demonstrated, not guessed.

Keep non-root support in the analysis
Another visible stem or branch phase may generate the rootless stem, while season can make its phase more or less available. Control and drain also remain active.

Separate natal rootlessness from moving roots
