Revealed Stems with and without Roots (透干有根與無根)
Compare rooted and rootless visible stems through a two-axis framework that separates visibility from branch support, season, and actual effectiveness.
Overview
Revealed Stems with and without Roots (透干有根與無根) compares two independent axes: a stem is visible because it appears in the four Heavenly Stems, and it is rooted only if qualifying hidden-stem support exists in the branches. A visible rootless stem still exists and acts; a rooted stem is not automatically strong or favorable. Season, integrity, and the full interaction network determine effectiveness.
At a glance
- Axis 1
- Visible or hidden
- Axis 2
- Rooted, residual-rooted, or rootless
- Root test
- Qualifying hidden stem in a branch
- Effectiveness
- Season, root quality, integrity, and relations
- Display policy
- Rootless visible qi may be visually discounted
- Limit
- Rootless does not mean absent; rooted does not mean dominant
Use a visibility-by-support matrix
Classify each relevant stem as visible or hidden, then independently record full root, residual root, or no qualifying root. This prevents the common error of treating exposure and rooting as synonyms.
A hidden stem can root another visible stem even though it is not itself exposed. A visible stem can remain rootless.
- Record two axes separately.
- Do not collapse hidden and rootless.
Compare effectiveness with the same evidence standard
For both rooted and rootless stems, check month command, generators, drains, controls, combinations, clashes, and the current question.
Root support is meaningful, but it does not override every other force. A rootless stem with strong generation can still act, while a rooted stem can be heavily contested.
- Apply one evidence sequence to both.
- Preserve support and counterpressure.
Keep display adjustments separate from engine facts
OpenFate may discount a rootless revealed element in a display layer so it does not visually outrank rooted qi. The underlying natal element scores and deterministic engine results remain intact.
This separation prevents a presentation aid from silently changing strength, useful-god, or pattern calculations.
- Label display-only adjustments.
- Do not mutate the natal calculation.
Avoid personality judgments from root status
Rootless does not mean unreliable, unsupported, unhealthy, or doomed; rooted does not mean stable, authentic, or successful. These are technical states, not character diagnoses.
Use proportional claims and real-world evidence for decisions.
- No moral ranking.
- No outcome guarantee.
