Hidden but Not Exposed in Bazi (藏而不透)
Understand when a branch contains a stem that does not appear above, what evidence it still provides, and why hidden does not mean absent or secret fate.
Overview
Hidden but not exposed (藏而不透) describes a stem present inside a branch without the same stem appearing in the visible Heavenly Stem row. The stem remains valid for branch composition, Ten Gods, roots, and seasonal context, but its expression is less explicit. Support, timing, and interactions may change relevance; absence above is not literal nonexistence.
At a glance
- Present where
- Inside one or more Earthly Branches
- Absent where
- Visible Heavenly Stem row
- Still supplies
- Ten God, root, and seasonal evidence
- Visibility
- Internal rather than explicit
- Possible changes
- Timing, support, or interactions may increase relevance
- Limit
- Hidden does not mean nonexistent or secret event
Confirm presence below and absence above
Expand every branch and find the relevant stem. Then inspect all four visible stems; if the same stem is absent there, the relationship can be described as hidden and unexposed.
Keep similarly phased but opposite-polarity stems distinct. Yi hidden below is not the same character as visible Jia.
- Match exact stem identity.
- Check all four visible positions.
Retain its structural evidence
The stem still receives a Ten God label relative to the Day Master and can support a matching visible stem as a root. It also remains part of the branch’s internal qi.
Unexposed status affects how directly the layer is represented; it does not delete the branch, hidden stem, or its lawful relationships.
- Preserve Ten God and root data.
- Do not set unexposed qi to zero.
Separate natal status from later activation
A Luck Pillar or annual pillar may introduce the same stem, repeat the branch, or create a relation that makes the hidden layer more relevant.
Describe the natal hidden condition first and the moving-period condition second. Timing is emphasis, not a promised event.
- Keep natal and timing layers separate.
- Name the actual activating symbol.
Avoid secret-personality narratives
An unexposed stem does not reveal suppressed character, hidden intentions, undisclosed relationships, or a fate waiting to emerge.
Use careful structural language and require real evidence for claims about the user or third parties.
- No mind reading from concealment.
- No deterministic event forecast.
