Primary Qi in Hidden Stems (本氣)
Understand primary qi as the leading hidden stem of a branch and learn how season, exposure, roots, and branch relations qualify its influence.
Overview
Primary Qi (本氣) is the first and structurally leading stem in a branch’s canonical hidden-stem sequence. It identifies the branch’s main internal phase and polarity. Primary does not mean always strongest in every chart: month, season, exposure, damage, combinations, and surrounding support still determine usable force.
At a glance
- Definition
- First hidden stem in the canonical branch sequence
- Role
- Leading internal phase and polarity
- Examples
- Yin–Jia, Si–Bing, Shen–Geng, Hai–Ren
- Ten God
- Derived relative to the Day Master
- Strength checks
- Season, exposure, roots, and branch condition
- Limit
- Primary does not mean automatically dominant
Identify primary qi from the ordered table
Take the first stem assigned to the branch: for example, Jia in Yin, Bing in Si, Geng in Shen, and Ren in Hai. Single-stem branches Zi, Mao, and You have only their primary qi.
Keep the exact stem, phase, and polarity. Saying only that a branch is Wood or Fire loses information needed for Ten God calculation.
- Use the first listed hidden stem.
- Preserve polarity as well as phase.
Use it as the branch’s leading internal evidence
Primary qi is the default starting point for the branch’s internal structure and may provide a direct root to a matching visible stem.
In the Month Branch it also sits inside the seasonal command, but Month Command analysis still includes the exact solar-term segment and the chart’s other evidence.
- Test root support by exact phase or stem rule.
- Give the Month Branch separate seasonal attention.
Check whether the leading qi is usable
Exposure can make the same stem more explicit, while repetition and seasonal support can reinforce it. A clash, combination, severe dryness or dampness, or competing structure can change how it functions.
Primary qi does not automatically defeat all other stems in the branch. Middle and residual qi can still matter when supported or exposed.
- Record strengthening and weakening conditions.
- Do not delete secondary layers.
Avoid turning primary qi into a personality label
The primary hidden stem is not a hidden self, dominant trait, or guaranteed life theme. It is one technical layer of one branch.
Any interpretation must remain conditional on Day Master, month command, complete roots, interactions, and timing.
- No identity claim from one hidden stem.
- State the full evidence chain.
