Middle-Qi Roots in Bazi (中氣根)
Understand roots supplied by a branch’s middle hidden qi and evaluate their condition through exposure, season, repetition, and competing relations.
Overview
A Middle-Qi Root (中氣根) links a visible stem to the middle layer of a multi-stem branch. It is legitimate root evidence but is usually more conditional than the branch’s primary qi. Exposure, season, repetition, adjacent support, and branch condition can increase or reduce its practical relevance; no fixed ratio applies to every chart.
At a glance
- Match
- Visible stem to a branch’s middle hidden layer
- Branch type
- Multi-stem branch only
- Root status
- Valid but condition-sensitive support
- Prominence factors
- Exposure, season, repetition, and generation
- Damage factors
- Weak season and adverse branch relations
- Limit
- No universal fraction of a primary root
Verify the branch really has a middle layer
Use the canonical order and identify the second hidden stem in a qualifying branch. Do not call a single-stem or unrelated secondary entry middle qi.
Match the visible stem under the declared root rule and retain the exact pillar location.
- Use ordered branch data.
- Name the middle hidden stem explicitly.
Look for conditions that make the root more explicit
When the same stem is visible, repeated, generated, or seasonally supported, the middle root may provide meaningful continuity.
If the layer remains hidden-only and out of season, treat it as weaker evidence without setting it to zero.
- Show exposure and repetition.
- Avoid all-or-nothing scoring.
Compare it with primary and competing qi
The branch’s primary qi remains structurally leading, and other chart relations may support a different phase.
Describe whether the middle root supplements, competes with, or is redirected by the dominant pathway.
- Keep branch layers in order.
- Record competing support.
Avoid symbolic overreach
A middle root is not a hidden talent, secondary partner, delayed fortune, or secret condition. It is branch-based support.
Use it only inside transparent strength and structure analysis.
- No literal identity from layer position.
- No event prediction from a middle root.
