Rooting through an Adjacent Pillar (鄰柱通根) describes a visible stem whose qualifying hidden-stem support is found in a neighboring pillar rather than directly below it. Adjacency can be recorded as positional context, but it does not create a root by itself or supply one universal bonus. The branch contents, qi layer, season, and interactions remain decisive inputs.

Identify an actual root before discussing distance

Expand the hidden stems in the neighboring branch and verify that one meets the declared matching rule for the visible stem. Merely sitting beside the stem’s pillar is not evidence.

A middle or residual hidden stem remains a root candidate, but its layer must be recorded instead of being promoted to primary qi.
