Overview

Hidden stems may support or obstruct a proposed combination and transformation by supplying roots, seasonal qi, or competing phases. They do not automatically substitute for a missing visible participant or prove that a combination has transformed. Identify the exact relation first, then test participants, season, support, roots, obstruction, and the adopted school rule.

At a glance

Possible role
Support, root, season, or obstruction evidence
First requirement
Identify the actual combination participants
Transformation checks
Season, target phase, roots, support, and blockers
Visibility
Hidden qi is not automatically a visible participant
School policy
Substitution and weighting rules must be declared
Limit
Combination presence does not prove transformation

Identify the exact combination before testing change

State whether the question concerns a Heavenly Stem combination, branch combination, three-harmony frame, seasonal frame, or another defined relation.

List the visible and branch participants. A general statement that hidden stems “join a combination” is too vague to audit.

  • Name the relation type.
  • Name every required participant.

Use hidden stems as conditional support or obstruction

A hidden target phase may provide root or seasonal continuity, while another hidden phase can compete with the proposed change.

Record whether the relevant qi is primary, middle, or residual, exposed or hidden-only, and seasonally available.

  • Show how hidden qi supports the target.
  • Show competing hidden qi.

Do not let support replace the transformation threshold

Transformation methods typically require more than pair presence: target-phase support, season, absence of decisive obstruction, and continuity must be checked.

Schools differ on whether hidden stems can substitute for visible evidence. State the rule and do not silently combine incompatible methods.

  • Separate relation, completion, and transformation.
  • Declare the school-specific threshold.

Avoid event claims from technical transformation

Even a well-supported transformation is a chart-structure conclusion, not proof of marriage, money, illness, conflict, or a date-specific event.

Keep the explanation conditional and use real-world evidence for consequential decisions.

  • No automatic event from hehua.
  • Keep timing and natal structure separate.
