Learn how a visible stem receives support from a branch’s leading hidden qi and why season, branch condition, and competing forces still qualify the root.
Overview
A Primary-Qi Root (本氣根) occurs when the stem being assessed matches the leading hidden qi of a supporting branch under the declared root rule. It is usually stronger evidence of continuity than a secondary-layer root, especially when in season or repeated. It still does not establish total strength, usefulness, or a favorable outcome.

Match the visible stem to leading branch qi
Expand the branch and select its first hidden stem. Compare that exact stem or same-phase relation under the declared method with the visible subject.
State whether the match is exact or polarity-broader. This avoids inflating root evidence through an unstated rule.

Give Month Command and season proper weight
A primary root in the Month Branch may carry direct seasonal relevance. A primary root elsewhere can still be strong when repeated or well supported.
Season is not the only factor: climate, visible generation, and interactions determine whether the qi can function.
- Identify whether the root is monthly.
- Add climate and network support.
Check whether the branch remains available
Clashes, combinations, punishments, harms, and breaks can modify the supporting branch, but do not automatically erase it.
Compare reinforcement and alternative roots before lowering the assessment. Report the reason for any downgrade.

Do not call primary roots automatically favorable
Strong continuity can support an excessive or unhelpful phase. Favorability requires the chart’s balance, climate, and chosen analytical framework.
