Combination Without Transformation (合而不化)
Understand why a Heavenly Stem pair can combine without changing phase, how to preserve the original stems, and what later timing can and cannot change.
Overview
Combination Without Transformation (合而不化) means a valid stem pair is present but the proposed transformed phase does not pass the stricter evidence test. Common reasons include unsuitable season, weak target roots, surviving source-element roots, rival partners, distance, or damage. The original stems continue to participate in Five-Phase and Ten-God analysis, while the combination may still bind, redirect, or reduce their availability.

Prove the combination before proving the non-transformation
First identify the exact stems, their position, and whether another eligible partner competes for either one. Without a defensible pair, “not transformed” is the wrong question.
Then name the proposed target phase and test it explicitly. A missing or weak target pathway supports non-transformation; it should not be assumed from disappointment with the chart.

Keep the source stems and their roots active
When transformation is not established, both stems retain their source elements, Ten-God assignments, roots, and interactions with the rest of the chart.
The combination can still make one function less available, create mutual restraint, or redirect a route. Describe that net effect instead of deleting the stems.

Publish the strongest blocker
An unsuitable Month Command, absent target roots, strong original roots, competing partners, clashes, or excessive distance can each block full transformation through a different mechanism.
List the decisive blocker and relevant counterevidence. A generic phrase such as “conditions are insufficient” is not auditable enough for a reviewed page.

- Include counterevidence and uncertainty.
Allow timing to reopen the test without rewriting the natal result
A Luck Pillar or year may supply the target phase, remove a blocker, introduce rivalry, or damage an existing contact. Recalculate the status for that bounded layer.
When the period ends, return to the natal baseline unless a later layer independently supplies the same evidence. The label does not forecast partnership failure, illness, loss, or any other event.
- Give timing evidence an expiry.
- Do not literalize “not transforming.”
