Overview

Same Character (相同) records an exact repeated Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch. Repetition can reinforce a function, create competition, echo a route, or make one relation available in several positions. It is narrower than same-phase 比和 and broader than 伏吟, which requires a repeated pillar or defined layer pattern. Position, roots, hidden stems, polarity, chart layer, and competing relations determine the result.

At a glance

Definition
The exact same stem or branch appears more than once
Difference from 比和
相同 requires identical characters, not only shared phase
Difference from 伏吟
Fu Yin requires a repeated pillar or defined layer pattern
Possible effect
Reinforcement, echo, distribution, or competition
Context
Position, roots, hidden stems, and chart layer
Boundary
Repetition does not guarantee a repeated event

Record the exact repeated symbol and positions

Name the repeated stem or branch and every pillar in which it appears.

A same-phase but different character belongs under 比和 rather than exact repetition.

  • Require identical characters.
  • Publish all positions.

Compare shared identity with different locations

The same character can carry different palace relevance, neighboring relations, and access in each pillar.

Repetition may reinforce one route or split it across competing demands; neither result is automatic.

  • Keep pillar context.
  • Assess reinforcement and competition.

Separate natal repetition, timing return, and Fu Yin

A Luck Pillar or year repeating a natal symbol is a time-bounded return, not a new natal placement.

Use 伏吟 only when the required pillar or layer pattern is actually repeated under the stated convention.

  • Label the chart layer.
  • Do not overextend Fu Yin.

Do not predict repetition from repetition alone

相同 does not prove that a relationship, illness, loss, job, or family event will happen twice.

Event analysis requires timing, whole-chart structure, and real-world evidence beyond symbol duplication.

  • No duplicated-event guarantee.
  • Preserve uncertainty.
