Strengthened by Clash in Bazi (沖旺)
Learn why a clash can sometimes mobilize an already strong branch, which evidence is required, and when the same contact instead damages or disperses it.
Overview
Strengthened by Clash (沖旺) is a conditional school interpretation in which a seasonally strong, rooted branch becomes more active rather than defeated when contacted by a weaker opponent. It is not a universal rule. The pair, comparative force, roots, season, support, storage context, and observable result must justify the label.
At a glance
- Base relation
- An actual Six-Clash pair
- Candidate target
- A seasonally strong, rooted, supported branch
- Opponent
- A comparatively weaker branch with access
- Possible result
- Mobilized strength, resistance, damage, or dispersion
- School status
- Conditional interpretation rather than universal rule
- Boundary
- 旺 does not mean favorable or prosperous
Prove the target is already strong
Show seasonal command, roots, support, repetition, and position before calling the branch 旺.
The clash does not create strength from nothing; it can only interact with an existing capacity.
- Establish baseline force.
- Do not infer strength from the result label.
Compare the opposing branch
A weak, unsupported challenger may mobilize resistance in the stronger target.
A strong or repeated challenger may instead damage, displace, or disperse the target, especially during timing.
- Measure both sides.
- Keep alternative results open.
Judge what increased salience actually does
A stronger branch can reinforce a needed function or intensify an excess.
Ten-God role, useful-function analysis, and whole-chart balance decide whether the effect is helpful.
- Separate force from usefulness.
- Name the affected function.
Do not translate 旺 as guaranteed success
沖旺 cannot alone prove promotion, profit, recovery, victory, conflict, or a dramatic event.
Use it only where comparative structural evidence supports the narrower activation claim.
- No prosperity promise.
- State school attribution.
