Generating Cycle (相生)
Understand the Five-Phase generating cycle, how producer and recipient strength change its effect, and why generation is not automatically favorable.
Overview
Generating Cycle (相生) describes Wood feeding Fire, Fire producing Earth, Earth producing Metal, Metal producing Water, and Water nourishing Wood. In a Bazi chart, generation transfers capacity: the producer may express, drain, or become overextended while the recipient gains only what the route can actually deliver. Season, roots, obstruction, distance, and useful-function context determine the net effect.

Read generation as a directional transfer
Name the producing phase and receiving phase instead of using “support” as an undirected label.
The same symbol can receive from one route and produce into another, so the complete chain matters.
- Keep producer and recipient distinct.
- Trace the direction through the chart.
Check whether the source can afford to produce
A rooted and seasonally supported source can transfer more effectively than an exhausted source.
Heavy output can weaken the producer even while strengthening the recipient.
- Assess source strength first.
- Record both gain and cost.
Test access, continuity, and blockage
Near, rooted, and connected phases usually form a clearer route than isolated matching symbols.
Clashes, combinations, cold, dryness, or an intervening controlling force may interrupt the expected flow.
- Show the actual route.
- Name any break in continuity.
Judge usefulness only after chart context
Generation can help a needed phase, overfeed an excess, or drain a needed source.
It does not independently prove kindness, talent, income, fertility, health, or a favorable event.
