Fan Yin in Bazi (反吟)
Understand the school-sensitive Fan Yin rule, how it differs from Fu Yin, and how to evaluate stem conflict, branch clash, timing, and boundaries.
Overview
Fan Yin (反吟) is a school-sensitive timing label commonly used when a timing pillar stands in strong opposition to a natal reference, often through stem overcoming or a declared stem clash together with branch clash. It must be distinguished from Fu Yin, which repeats the same pillar. The exact convention, reference pillar, direction, force, and time window must be disclosed.

State the Fan Yin rule before applying it
Lineages differ on whether stem overcoming is enough or a named stem-clash pair is required above the branch clash.
Publish the chosen convention so the result can be reproduced.
- Declare the stem rule.
- Use an exact branch clash.
Name the natal and timing pillars
Show the natal reference pillar and the Luck, annual, monthly, or other timing pillar compared with it.
Do not assemble the upper and lower relations from unrelated pillar pairs.
- Keep pillar pairing exact.
- Identify the active layer.
Assess force and distinguish Fu Yin
Compare roots, season, support, combinations, and other branch groups before assigning prominence.
If the timing pillar repeats rather than opposes the natal pillar, use Fu Yin under its separate rule.
- Measure actual force.
- Do not confuse repetition with reversal.
Reject automatic disaster narratives
反吟 cannot alone predict death, accident, divorce, illness, bankruptcy, migration, or family harm.
Describe the time-bounded opposition, affected functions, and uncertainty without fear-based certainty.

- Give the signal an expiry.
