Overview

Overcoming Cycle (相剋) describes Wood controlling Earth, Earth controlling Water, Water controlling Fire, Fire controlling Metal, and Metal controlling Wood. Control is not automatically harmful: sufficient, proportionate control can regulate a phase, while weak control may fail and excessive force may damage either side. Strength, season, roots, distance, mediation, and useful-function context decide the result.

Identify controller and controlled phase

Write the direction of control and locate the actual stems, branches, and roots carrying it.

Mutual presence alone does not show which side can impose force.

  • Name both roles.
  • Anchor the rule to chart symbols.

Compare force before assigning effect

A strong controller meeting a weak target differs from a weak controller confronting a rooted target.

Season and roots can turn apparent control into resistance, exhaustion, or only nominal pressure.

  • Compare seasonal support.
  • Include roots on both sides.

Look for production, combination, and access changes

A mediating phase may transform direct control into a productive route.

Combination, distance, or damage can occupy one participant and reduce the control that is actually available.

  • Test a bridging phase.
  • Do not double-count occupied symbols.

Separate regulation from event claims

Balanced control may provide structure; excessive or resisted control may create tension in the technical model.

The relation alone cannot diagnose illness, abuse, loss, legal trouble, or relationship failure.

  • Describe proportional effect.
  • Keep medical and legal conclusions out.
