Overview

Gai Tou and Jie Jiao (蓋頭、截腳) are school-specific labels for a controlling relation between a pillar’s Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch: commonly the stem controls downward in 蓋頭, while the branch’s governing qi controls the stem above in 截腳. The labels suggest constrained support or expression, not automatic destruction. Exact stem, branch, hidden qi, season, roots elsewhere, and lineage definitions must be checked.

Define the adopted direction before using the label

Many modern schools use 蓋頭 for a stem controlling its branch and 截腳 for branch qi controlling the stem. Other authors may broaden or reverse parts of the terminology.

State the exact stem, branch, governing hidden qi, and direction of control. The label alone is not auditable.

  • Publish the school definition.
  • Show the actual controlling relation.

Assess constrained availability, not deletion

Control within a pillar can make support less direct or expression less stable, especially when the controlled side lacks season and reinforcement.

Roots elsewhere, generation, exposure, or a stronger seasonal route can preserve the controlled force.

  • Grade constraint by context.
  • Search for reinforcement elsewhere.

Apply the effect to the correct side of the balance

Determine whether the controlled stem or branch would otherwise support, drain, or control the Day Master. The same configuration can raise or lower net Day Master strength depending on that relation.

Do not attach one fixed favorable or unfavorable meaning to every pillar.

  • Resolve the target relation first.
  • Recalculate the net balance.

Avoid literal “head” and “feet” predictions

The terms do not diagnose head, leg, mobility, hierarchy, oppression, or family conflict. They are structural shorthand.

Medical or safety claims require evidence outside the chart.

  • No body-part diagnosis.
  • No automatic interpersonal narrative.
