Overview

Resting (休) is the phase assigned to the element that generates the season’s prosperous element. Because it has given rise to the governing qi, it is described as resting rather than dominant. The label does not mean absent, inactive, or harmful. A rooted, exposed, or otherwise supported 休 element can still matter materially in strength, structure, and climate analysis.

Trace the element that feeds the season

Identify 旺, then move one step backward in the generating cycle to the element that produces it. That source element occupies 休.

The name describes relative seasonal position. It should not be translated into literal sleep, retirement, or inactivity.

  • Derive 休 from the generating relation.
  • Keep the label technical.

Recognize reduced seasonal priority without deleting qi

休 does not receive the leading seasonal position because its energy is described as feeding the current ruler. Its baseline availability is therefore different from 旺 or 相.

Roots, visibility, repetition, and supportive relations can nevertheless make it active. A phase label is not a zero score.

  • Lower seasonal position is not absence.
  • Check independent support.

Judge what the resting element does in this chart

Determine its Ten God relation to the Day Master and whether it supplies needed generation, excessive support, useful climate adjustment, or an unwanted route.

The same seasonal phase can be helpful, neutral, or problematic depending on the chart’s imbalance and question.

  • Connect 休 to chart function.
  • Separate phase from favorability.

Do not infer passive personality or stalled life

A 休 element does not prove laziness, rest, illness, retirement, delay, or loss of ambition. Those are literalized narratives unsupported by the phase label.

Use full chart and factual context for any biographical interpretation.

  • No personality claim from 休.
  • Keep uncertainty visible.
