Supportive Seasonal Phase (Xiang) (相)
Understand 相 as the element generated by the prosperous seasonal element, its relative seasonal support, and why support is not identical to usefulness.
Overview
Supportive (相) is the phase assigned to the element generated by the season’s prosperous element. In spring, for example, Wood is prosperous and Fire is supportive. 相 indicates that the seasonal flow feeds this element, but it remains a relational classification rather than a fixed score or favorable verdict. Roots, visibility, climate, and the complete chart determine its actual use.

After identifying the prosperous seasonal element, move one step forward in the generating cycle. The generated element occupies the 相 position.
This is a five-element relation, not the visible “Minister” Ten God or a political role. Terminology should prevent those meanings from being mixed.

- Keep phase labels distinct from Ten Gods.
Treat 相 as supported but not sovereign
The season’s leading qi generates the supportive phase, so it often has meaningful availability. It does not occupy the same position as the governing 旺 element.
A method may weight the two differently, but any coefficient is implementation policy and should be documented.

Check whether the supportive element has a usable path
Roots, visible stems, hidden layers, transformations, and climate determine whether the generated seasonal qi can operate in this chart.
If the element is already excessive, additional support can worsen imbalance. If it is needed, 相 may provide an important route.
