Generative Support (De Sheng) in Bazi (得生)
Understand how Resource elements generate the Day Master, how 得生 differs from peer and root support, and why generation can help or overload a chart.
Overview
Generative Support (得生) means that the Day Master or named target receives qi from the element that generates it. For the Day Master, these are Direct and Indirect Resource forces. Generation can replenish or protect a weak target, but its practical effect depends on the generator’s season, roots, exposure, path, and whether more support improves the chart’s balance.

Name the generator and its path
Identify the element that generates the target, then locate its visible and hidden stems. For a Day Master, classify them as Direct or Indirect Resource by polarity.
A theoretical generating cycle is not enough. The generator must have usable qi and a path not fully redirected by stronger relations.
- Show the exact generating symbols.
- Test whether the path is available.
Evaluate the generator before crediting support
A rooted, seasonal Resource can provide stronger evidence than an isolated unrooted stem. Combinations, clashes, drains, and climate can alter what reaches the target.
Record the source and any contesting relation rather than giving every Resource symbol the same score.
- Grade Resource quality.
- Preserve interrupted pathways.
Separate support from usefulness
Resource usually helps a weak Day Master, yet too much Resource can congest the chart, suppress Output, or intensify an already strong support side.
The final recommendation follows balance, structure, and climate. “Generates me” is not synonymous with “good for me.”

Do not equate Resource qi with care or education
得生 does not prove parental care, academic success, protection, documents, or medical recovery. These are separate interpretive questions.
Keep the elemental relation technical and require additional evidence for life-domain statements.
