Common Mistakes When Reading Annual and Luck Cycles Together
Avoid replacing the natal chart, using the wrong active pillar, splitting stems and branches mechanically, double-counting repeats, and forcing events.
Overview
The most damaging annual-and-luck-cycle errors are structural: changing the natal chart to fit a later year, selecting a Luck Pillar by rounded age instead of effective dates, treating stem and branch halves as if one disappears, merging all relation families into good or bad scores, and counting repeated symbols as independent proof. Another mistake is starting from a remembered event and searching backward for a symbol. A sound reading preserves layer provenance, conditions, counterevidence, and the option of no conclusion.

Do not alter the natal chart to fit a period
Birth pillars, Day Master, Month Command, and natal structure remain the fixed comparison baseline.
A timed element can support or obstruct a natal function, but it does not become a new birth fact.
- Preserve frozen natal data.
- Separate temporary expression.
Do not approximate the active time layer
Rounded ages, calendar years, or Lunar New Year cannot replace the declared Luck-Pillar transition and Bazi year boundaries.
When a transition occurs inside a year, split the interval and assess each active pillar separately.
- Use exact effective dates.
- Disclose boundary policy.
Do not collapse or double-count evidence
Stems and branches remain active as a complete pillar; school-specific half-cycle weighting does not switch one component off.
The same character repeated across layers may reinforce one pathway, but repetition does not create multiple independent facts.
- Preserve complete Jiazi.
- Deduplicate shared mechanisms.
Do not reverse-engineer certainty from an event
A known event can illustrate a declared method but cannot justify changing rules, boundaries, useful gods, or structure after the fact.
Test counterexamples and retain uncertainty, especially when source times or formation conditions are incomplete.
- Lock rules before the case.
- Permit a non-match.
