Overview

Some traditions divide a ten-year Luck Pillar into two interpretive phases, giving the stem greater weight in the first five years and the branch greater weight in the second. The complete stem-branch pair remains present throughout the period, and annual influences continue to change each year. Other schools read the whole pillar without this split, so the phase rule must be named, versioned, and treated as weighting rather than deterministic switching.

The split describes relative emphasis

Under the common two-phase convention, the earlier half is interpreted with more attention to the arriving stem and the later half with more attention to the branch.

It does not mean the branch is absent for five years or that the stem vanishes at the midpoint.

  • Model emphasis, not on-off state.
  • Retain the entire Jiazi in both phases.

Use calculated dates rather than rounded birthdays

Determine the Luck Pillar’s actual start and end dates, then derive its midpoint from the stored duration instead of assuming a January boundary or exact birthday.

If the product exposes a phase label, it should show the date range and the reason for the label.

  • Compute the midpoint from real boundaries.
  • Display phase dates transparently.

Preserve disagreement among reading schools

Some texts and lineages emphasize a two-part reading, while others insist that the stem and branch operate together for all ten years.

A scalable system may support one default phase hint, but it must label that hint as methodology and not alter deterministic annual scores or natal data.

  • Version the weighting policy.
  • Keep alternative readings reproducible.

Half-periods do not create five identical years

Each year introduces a different annual stem and branch, while real circumstances, decisions, and external conditions also change.

Do not promise five favorable years, warn of five uniformly harmful years, or schedule a specific event from the midpoint alone.

  • Always inspect the annual layer.
  • Avoid block forecasts and event guarantees.
