Forward and Reverse Luck-Pillar Sequences
Understand how forward and reverse Luck-Pillar sequences move from the month pillar and why direction must be fixed before start-age calculation.
Overview
Forward and reverse describe the direction in which the Luck-Pillar Jiazi sequence moves from the natal month pillar. Forward takes the next stem and branch in canonical order; reverse takes the preceding pair. The direction is selected by a declared tradition, commonly using birth-year stem polarity together with recorded sex. It is a calculation rule, not a statement about a person moving forward or backward in life.

Both directions begin from the same anchor
The natal month pillar supplies the fixed reference point. Direction changes which adjacent Jiazi becomes the first Luck Pillar.
Starting from different month pillars or skipping invalid pairs produces a different sequence and should be treated as a calculation error.
- Display the anchor month pillar.
- Generate only canonical Jiazi pairs.
Use one explicit selection convention
A common Zi Ping rule combines the Yin or Yang polarity of the birth-year stem with the recorded male or female calculation input.
Other lineages may define direction differently. A system should name its rule rather than mix conventions to obtain a preferred result.
- Record the source rule.
- Do not switch direction during interpretation.
Direction also selects the solar-term interval
Under the common method, a forward chart measures toward the next applicable term and a reverse chart toward the preceding term.
The same birth instant can therefore yield different start intervals when direction changes, even before the Luck-Pillar meanings are considered.
- Apply direction consistently to both steps.
- Retain the selected solar term.
Forward and reverse are technical labels
Reverse movement does not mean regression, blocked development, poor character, or unfavorable fate. Forward movement does not imply progress or superiority.
The entered sex value is used only for the declared traditional calculation rule and must not be used to infer identity, behavior, or social roles.
- Avoid moral or gender stereotypes.
- Keep interpretation separate from direction.
