What Is an Annual Influence in Bazi?
Learn what a Bazi annual influence is, how its stem-branch year layer differs from the natal chart and Luck Pillar, and its limits.
Overview
An annual influence, or Liu Nian, is the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch assigned to a defined year interval. It is a short timing layer placed over the natal chart and active Luck Pillar. The year Jiazi can form Ten-God and stem-branch relations with those layers, but it does not alter birth data or guarantee annual events.

Define the annual Jiazi and its boundary
The annual layer contains one stem and one branch, with the branch retaining its hidden stems and registered relations.
State whether the application changes the Bazi year at Li Chun or follows another disclosed boundary; do not mix it with the lunar New Year silently.
- Keep the complete Jiazi.
- Publish the year-boundary rule.
Keep annual, Luck-Pillar, and natal layers distinct
The natal chart remains fixed, the Luck Pillar provides a longer interval, and the annual influence supplies a shorter dated layer.
Every derived role and relation should retain provenance so an annual symbol is not stored as though it were natal.
- Label the source layer.
- Do not rewrite the birth chart.
Use the year to refine timing context
Map the annual stem to its Ten-God role and test both characters against the natal chart and active Luck Pillar.
The annual layer can repeat, complete, support, or oppose a broader mechanism, but all formation conditions and counterevidence remain required.
- Read stem and branch together.
- Trace exact contacts.
An annual influence is not a prediction calendar
The year pillar does not prove marriage, profit, illness, litigation, danger, success, or any other event.
Use it as traditional interpretive timing context and make decisions from real evidence, consent, risk controls, and qualified advice.
- Avoid event guarantees.
- Do not treat a year label as causation.
