Gender Rules for Forward and Reverse Luck Pillars
Learn the traditional polarity-and-sex rule for Luck-Pillar direction, what data it uses, and how to document it without identity stereotypes.
Overview
In a widely used traditional rule, a male entry with a Yang birth-year stem and a female entry with a Yin birth-year stem move forward; the opposite pairings move in reverse. The rule first classifies the year stem as Yin or Yang and then combines that value with the calculation sex field. It is a historical algorithmic convention, not a modern theory of gender, identity, personality, or social destiny.
At a glance
- Polarity input
- Birth-year Heavenly Stem
- Second input
- Recorded calculation sex
- Forward pairs
- Yang male, Yin female
- Reverse pairs
- Yin male, Yang female

- Traditional convention
- Boundary
- No identity inference
The rule uses two explicit inputs
First classify the birth-year Heavenly Stem as Yang or Yin. Then combine that polarity with the sex value supplied for the traditional chart calculation.
Zodiac animal, Day Master polarity, name, appearance, and inferred identity are not substitute inputs under this convention.
- Use the birth-year stem, not the branch.
- Never guess the sex input.
Apply the four-case matrix consistently
Yang-male and Yin-female cases are assigned the forward sequence, while Yin-male and Yang-female cases are assigned the reverse sequence.
The selected direction must then be used consistently for both the Jiazi sequence and the relevant solar-term interval.
- Implement all four cases explicitly.
- Test every polarity-and-sex combination.
Label the convention and its limits
Historical and modern schools do not all resolve sex, polarity, or start-age conventions identically. A reader must be able to see which rule generated the chart.
Where the product supports only one convention, it should say so rather than presenting that choice as universal or scientifically established.
- Version the direction policy.
- Keep alternative methods editorial, not silently blended.
Do not turn a legacy input into a gender claim
This binary calculation field does not determine gender identity, sexuality, temperament, relationship role, capability, or life trajectory.
When the input does not fit a user’s identity or the user does not wish to provide it, explain the limitation and, where possible, show how the two direction outputs differ.
- Use respectful, neutral language.
- Expose uncertainty instead of assigning identity.
